One Month Countdown

By Motivation, World Records No Comments

We are less than one month away from the World Record for the largest book signing in history! Ahhhh yea!

The website, marketing materials and announcement will go out next week but wanted to give you a sneak peek into what the website looks like, allow you to be one of the first to register for the event (We have some fun giveaways for the first 100 people who register) and share in the excitement that on Wednesday April 16, 2014 you and I will break a World Record and be part of history!

Three things to do for the one month countdown:

1) Register: For the onsite or online event and reserve your spot in history now! If you can’t make the onsite event, you can still participate by getting a book online on April 16th through the CSUworldrecord.com website.

2) Share the website: Let your network know you are going to be part of a world record on April 16th and they should join in on the action!

3) Get ready to break history: Get ready to tell everyone you know that you created history on April 16th and broke a world record! No big deal!

Three reasons why you should be a part of this event:

1) All profits go towards supporting CSU scholarship funds for first generation students.

2) You become part of a Guinness World Record and create history.

3) You receive a book that will help you become more successful, more employable and a better speaker.

I am excited to be doing this with you and will need your help to make this happen. We need to sell and sign 5,000 books on Wednesday April 16th in order to break the World Record and I know together we can make this happen. Share with your fiends, family and co-workers and let’s get our name in the history books. As always…

Five Things to Ask Before You Give a Non-profit Your Money!

By Leadership, Motivation One Comment

There are over 1.5 million non-profits registered in the United State. If you donated $25 every day to each of those organizations, it would take you 164.38 years to say you supported them all financially. Luckily, we as individuals, do not need to support every good cause out there. Everyone has different interests. I like to help at-risk youth travel abroad and learn from interacting with diverse cultures. You might like to help shelter the homeless and get them back on their feet.

Here are five questions you can ask yourself when thinking about what non-profit(s) to give your money to.

1. Where does my money really go? Check for the organizations financial documents and financial charts. They are usually located under the “about us” or “donate” landing page. If you do not see their financial statement on their website, this should be a red-flag and I would not recommend donating to that cause. When donating, you will want to see more than 70% of your money going back to their core mission (education, programs, research, etc.). 15-20% (25% max) should be spent on fundraising and 5-10% on administration costs such as facilities, maintenance and employees.

2. Where do my friends give? I posted on Facebook “what are some good organizations I should donate money to” and within 24 hours I got more ideas and explanations of good causes then I could think of. Most likely your circle of friends are interested in the same things you are. They might have a couple organizations they already support and will be able to provide you with some valuable information and statistics about some organizations you were not aware of.

3. What are the top three things that interest me most in the world? For me I love to travel, give and speak. Writing down your top three things that interest you most will help narrow your decision on which organization you might be interested in giving to. When you choose an organization that you are interested in, your passion shows and both you and the organization benefit.

4. Is it local? Not because it needs to be local to give. I give to several organizations across the world, the reason why this is important is because you might want to go and check out what they do. How are their facilities? Talk to an employee and see how long they have worked there and why they do what they do.

5. What do I get out of it? Don’t just think about the organization, think about yourself. If you are donating to a school in Africa, are you interested in receiving updates from students on what they are learning? If you are donating to an animal shelter do you want to be on their list that show animals that are getting adopted and treated to see where your money is going? See what the organization does for their donors and how they reward them for supporting their mission.

Here is my challenge to you: Ask yourself these five questions and take $10 this week to give to one organization that you have never donated to before. I will do the same. When you find the organization you want to give to, post it below and share with everyone why you chose it. I look forward to hearing who you are giving to this week and why.

QUESTION: Will you take the $10 challenge?

Weekend Training Update!

By Motivation, World Records No Comments

This weekend I spent training for the World Record on April 16th. One of the hardest parts of this World Record is sitting still for 11 hours!

Ryan Avery's apartmentI get antsy after sitting for one hour let alone doing the same thing over and over again (signing my name) and sitting in the same spot! So we decided to watch the entire 4th season of Breaking Bad on our couch while eating carbs that are allowed on the P90X diet!

Things I did not consider for this record was the Sharpie smell that my nose will digest for those 11 hours. I was starting to get a headache after 2 hours so I have some work to do in that category! My hand starts to get tired around 2,000 signatures right now but I have a great training schedule that will keep me on track.

Ryan Avery sending lettersI am 75% done with the letters I am writing everyone who sent in their request for me to write a hand written letter. I got WAY more than I thought I would but I want to make sure everyone gets one who met the deadline. It has been fun to write these and think about the times when hand written letters were the most popular form of communicating over far distances.

The website is coming along. It’s not 100% ready but if you want to check it out before we launch… here it is: www.CSUworldrecord.com. Register for the 16th online or onsite! We will launch next week and start getting the 5,000 people we need to break the World Record.

This has been a challenge and I am glad I had the weekend to practice. Now this week is all about strengthening my wrist, writing more letters and figuring out how not to get high from the Sharpie smell! Enjoy the start to your Monday and as always…

Ryan

Interview with Simon Sinek

By Leadership No Comments

This week I was able to interview one of my favorite “students of leadership” and authors, Simon Sinek.

I was offered this by my friend and podcast extraordinaire, Jared Easley! (Check out his podcast, he has interviewed the greats like Seth Godin, Michael Hyatt, Guy Kawasaki and more!)

I recommend you listen to the entire interview because it is packed with insight, inspiration and information that will transform your life! Here are three takeaways you should consider for being a stronger speaker, leader and champion in your industry!

“One trait all successful leaders must have – courage. It’s not about charisma; it’s not about having a wonderful personality it’s about taking the risk before everyone else does.”
I felt like he was speaking right to me when he was sharing this. I am excited and at the same time nervous to

“To really be able to make a difference, you have to be able to devote your energy and yourself to one thing, not a lot of things!”
I agree with Simon on this 100%! In fact, I teach this in several of my workshops. It is not about doing a lot of little things good but rather doing one thing so well, over time, you become the best at it. Once you become the best at something, other doors open, your other passions can live and you become more satisfied with what you are giving the world!

“Advice to young speakers and writers – don’t strive to be one, but be interested in sharing an IDEA, be interested in GIVING and not focusing on yourself!”
I have mixed feelings on this one but I agree with him about sharing an idea and being ready to give more to your readers, audience and listens than you take. Remember… “When you give more, you get more!” I think you can focus on being a speaker or writer but have in mind first how you will add value and change people’s lives with your voice!

He is on my top list of favorite speakers and authors and I cannot wait to meet him in person one day soon. Listen to the podcast to get the full interview and remember to always have courage, focus on one thing and give more than you take! As always…

Marketing Fail

Marketing Fail!

By Leadership, Motivation 2 Comments

I am at the post office getting stamps and I look to my right to see the above image. Freedom is scratched out and I ask the cashier “Why does the line go through the FOREVER like that?”

He says, “It’s so people don’t steal them and try to use them as a stamp.”

I laughed and thought he was joking because they are magnets. I thought “a) are there really people that dumb enough to try and use an oversized magnet as a stamp and b) why on earth would they choose to put a line through FOREVER?”

He did not laugh back and was completely serious!

They could have made any other mark. A huge X through the entire stamp. They could have put a watermark over it. they could have done so many other things than cross out FOREVER!

All I am saying is I am considering this to be a HUGE marketing failure for the Post Office! Would you agree?

Question: What is a “Fail” you have seen recently?

Schuller – Friday Quote Day

By Motivation, Quotes One Comment

This week’s quotes focus on a man named Robert H. Shculler. I read as many quotes as I can and look to remember many of them to help when I am speaking or to use in my workshops. Here are a few powerful ones to keep you motivated and heading in the right direction!

“Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines.” – Robert H. Schuller

“I’d rather attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed.” – Robert H. Schuller

“Tough times never last, but tough people do.” – Robert H. Schuller

“High achievers spot rich opportunities swiftly, make big decisions quickly and move into action immediately. Follow these principles and you can make your dreams come true.” – Robert H. Schuller

“Let your hopes, not your hurts, shape your future.” – Robert H. Schuller

“Goals are not only absolutely necessary to motivate us. They are essential to really keep us alive.” – Robert H. Schuller

Question: What is your favorite quote above?

Keep Going!

By Leadership, Motivation No Comments

When you are going for your goals there will be obstacles in your way! The bigger the goal, the bigger the obstacles!

They are there as markers to see if you are ready to make your dreams happen! Look at them… and run right through!

We all have goals and dreams and when a bump comes up or a roadblock stands in our way, we have to keep fighting and moving forward toward the dreams we have for ourselves.

This week has been full of surprises, ups and downs and some major roadblocks! However, so many people and organizations are on board for the World Record on April 16th and this goal is worth fighting for.

Your goal is also! Keep going, keep pushing yourself and keep making things happen! It’s worth it! As always…

4 Ways to Reflect on Going Back

By Family & Personal Life 2 Comments

This week I am in Fort Collins, CO at Colorado State University (CSU) to meet with campus and community members to help break the World Record on April 15th.

It feels like I am walking in a futuristic Twilight Zone as I cross the same streets and enter the same buildings I did when I was an undergrad here more than five years ago. New architecture, same professors and I swear these students look way younger than they did when I went to school here!

I have lived so much in the past five years and hands down without the experience I gained, knowledge I developed and people I met at CSU I would not be where I am today. As happy as CSU made me it feels strange to be back and reflect on the roller coaster ride college was.

I caught myself feeling several emotions as I walked campus and remembered the really good and extremely difficult times I spent here. As I started reflecting I wanted to make sure my thoughts were not, “Ahh.. I miss those days.” but rather, “Ahh… I am so glad I had those days.” Yes… even the tough ones, the really tough ones!

Next time you are feeling mixed emotions and visiting your past, here are five ways you can reflect on your life in a positive light:

1) Give thanks you were able to make that memory: That memory made you. Good or bad, memories help shape who you are and help you make decisions today. Give thanks for being able to make memories that many will never experience!

2) Give thanks you are able to remember that memory: As my grandmother is forgetting more and more everyday, I am reminded that even if the memory is positive or negative, the power of being able to bring that memory back to life is a gift to be thankful for. Use it to your advantage and focus on the

3) Think of those you still have in your life from that experience: Is there someone you met or who changed your life during that experience? Someone you use as inspiration to live a better life. Someone who pushes you to be stronger, more successful… maybe even a little sweeter! Be thankful you were able to experience their energy!

4) Think of the decisions you made because of the decisions you made: I noticed this post today on my friends Facebook, “As looking back on my life, I realize every time I  thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being re-directed to something better.”  Every decision you made gave you something in return and the choice is up to you on the way you view it. Make it positive and remember we control our own life.

Whether you are going back to your college, school or a hometown there were good and bad things that happened to you while you were there. Those things made you who you are today. Reflect on why your future will be better because of your past decisions, interactions and memories made! As always…

Ryan Avery

Today’s Question: What one memory are you thankful for (good/bad) that shaped you into the person you are today?

World Record for the Largest Book Signing in History with Ryan Avery

1,000 Signatures and counting…

By Motivation, World Records 4 Comments

I have started my training for the World Record on April 15th. 5,000 signatures in ten hours will be what it takes to take home the gold.

I wanted to see how many times I could sign my name before my wrist got weak and I got to about 1,000. Then I switched to my left hand and as you can see from the photo above… I have a lot of work to do before then… especially with my left hand signature.

At first, 5,000 signatures seems doable… then you try it and you tell yourself you better get training!

So today I am putting together a training schedule to get ready for this record. It will include signing my name more 100,000 times, writing 500 letters, doing push-ups everyday and working with one of those 5-pound hand grips with a spring.

If I want to do this, training is a must.

This week I am in Fort Collins meeting with campus and community organizations to help market the event and get people on board to break a World Record at CSU! Remember to stay in touch by signing up for the blog at the top right hand corner of this page and email me at ryan@averytoday.com if you have ideas or contacts that can help with the event!

Once I get my training schedule completed, I will share with you my plans to get ready to sign 5,000 books on April 15th! Together… we will break a world record!!! As always…

The Shark Rule

By Adventure 2 Comments

My book this week is called “Selling The Invisible” by Harry Beckwith.

Packed with small chapters, powerful reminders and an insightful look into the way we can market the invisible, it is becoming one of my new favorite marketing books. I would highly recommend you

I am halfway through it when I read the “The Shark Rule.”

Ryan Avery's The Shark Rule“If a shark does not move, it cannot breath. And it Dies” What Beckwith says in this chapter, and the one before it, is if you keep planning and stay still while never putting your ideas into action, they will never live. You have to keep trying, you have to keep pushing yourself, and you must keep your ideas moving!

It’s like Guy Kawasaki’s “Ready. Fire. Aim.” model. Quit looking for your product/website/invention to be perfect before you get it out there.  Move! Keep moving or your idea will die!

When I launched this website last week, I had four people proof read every page and people are still emailing me to let me know there are a few typos here and there. We will add to this website every week with new blog posts, products and videos… but if you wait for things to be perfect and don’t get going or keep moving on your idea, message or invention- it will never live.

Do what Bill Gates did when he put his software out there for free and got feedback on how he could make it better. Do what J.K. Rowling did and keep looking for a publisher and you might get one after your twelfth rejection. Do what Abraham Lincoln did and become President after you lose close to a dozen elections.

Do what sharks do and keep moving because the idea you have needs to become a reality and we deserve to see it!

Happy Monday and as always…

Dream BIG,
Ryan Avery
